Tacoma, JBLM and Lacey are in the heart of the South Puget Sound region, an area of more than 20 municipalities, with a population in excess of one million residents who enjoy year-round outdoor recreation, professional sports, symphonies/concerts, theaters, museums, parks, night life, neighborhood farmers markets and a whole lot more. The area is bounded on the west side by Puget Sound waters and on the east side by Mount Rainier. To the North is Seattle and to the South is the State Capital, Olympia.
Tacoma's Past and Present
Nisqually and Puyallup Native Americans tribes first inhabited the area along South Puget Sound. Lumber was the reason European-Americans first settled here. In 1852, the first saw mill was constructed and many more followed. The railroad came to the area in the late 1800's in order to link up with shipping vessels using the deep-water bays.
Today, Tacoma is the 5th largest shipping port in North America, making the region a major player in the wave of economic globalization. Some of the well-known companies with a presence in the area include, Boeing, State Farm Insurance, Intel, Expedia.com, Amazon, REI, Weyerhaeuser and the University of Washington. Joint Base Lewis McChord (JBLM) is the area's largest employer and is home to the U. S. Army's I Corps and 7th Infantry Division and the U. S. Air Force's 62nd Airlift Wing and 446th Airlift Wing.
